Children are natural explorers. They notice a leaf moving in the wind, compare two toys, watch an insect crawl across the ground, or suddenly ask: “Why did that happen?”
These moments may seem simple, but they can be the beginning of something much more important: learning how to think.
One useful way to understand the development of critical thinking is as a gradual journey:
And the journey begins with one simple skill:
Observe.
Observing Is More Than Simply Looking
Seeing something and truly observing it are not the same. Observation means paying attention to details, differences, changes, patterns, and relationships.
Imagine giving a child two apples.
“They are both apples.”
Another child might notice:
“This one is darker, this one is smaller, and this one has a spot.”
The second child is gathering more information from what they see.
In early childhood education, observation is also an important way of understanding children's development, interests, learning processes, and emerging skills. Developmentally appropriate observation is most useful when it takes place naturally during play, conversation, and everyday experiences.
Why Does Observation Matter?
Before children can think deeply about something, they need information about it. Observation is one way children collect that information.
For example, imagine a child notices that one plant near a window is growing faster than another plant.
At first, the child may simply notice the difference.
Then a question might appear:
“Why is this plant bigger?”
That question could lead to another:
“Does sunlight make it grow faster?”
And then:
“What would happen if we moved the plants?”
Now the child has moved from simply noticing something toward questioning, investigating, and reasoning.
The goal isn't simply for children to notice more details. The goal is to help them develop the habit of:
Observation Can Be the Beginning of a Learning Cycle
Observation is rarely the end of thinking. It can be the beginning.
A child may:
- Observe that two objects move differently.
- Compare them.
- Question why they are different.
- Analyze what they noticed.
- Connect the observation to something they already know.
- Predict what might happen if something changes.
- Test the idea.
This type of inquiry-based learning gives children opportunities to explore ideas rather than simply receive answers.
How Parents Can Encourage Observation
Parents don't need complicated activities or special equipment. Some of the best opportunities are already part of everyday life.
During a Walk
“What do you notice today?”
Looking at Nature
“What differences do you see between these leaves?”
Reading a Story
“Look at the character's face. What do you notice?”
During Play
“What happened when you changed that?”
Good Questions Often Begin With Good Observation
Suppose a child asks:
“Why does the moon look like that?”
An adult could immediately give a scientific explanation. Of course, answering is perfectly fine. But sometimes it can be even more valuable to pause and ask:
“What do you think?”
Or:
“What did you notice that made you ask that?”
This gives the child an opportunity to express an idea before receiving an explanation.
The adult becomes more than a source of answers. The adult becomes a partner in the child's thinking process.
A Common Mistake: Giving the Answer Too Quickly
Children ask questions because they are trying to understand the world. If adults always provide the answer immediately, children may learn to wait for information rather than investigate it themselves.
Instead of:
“Because that's how it works.”
Try:
“What do you think might be happening?”
Then:
“What did you notice?”
And:
“How could we find out?”
This doesn't mean children should be left without accurate information. It simply creates space for them to think first and learn from the answer afterward.
Observation Through Play
Play provides some of the most natural opportunities for children to observe, compare, and investigate.
For example, give a child several toy cars and a simple ramp. Instead of explaining which car will move fastest, let the child experiment.
- “What did you notice?”
- “Which car moved faster?”
- “What was different about the cars?”
- “What do you think will happen if we try again?”
- “How could we find out?”
The child isn't simply playing. They are practicing a sequence of thinking skills:
And importantly, there doesn't always need to be one perfect answer. The process of thinking is the learning experience.
The Role of Teachers
Observation is valuable for teachers, too. A teacher can observe:
- What a child pays attention to
- How the child describes what they see
- What kinds of questions they ask
- How they explain an idea
- How they respond to a problem
- Whether they change their thinking after discovering new information
Careful observation can help educators understand not only what children know, but also how they approach learning, problems, questions, and new information.
So observation isn't only about asking:
“What does this child know?”
It can also help us ask:
“How does this child think?”

Choose an ordinary object: a leaf, a stone, a toy, a picture, or a cup.
Give the child about 30 seconds to look at it carefully. Then guide the conversation through four simple steps.
Observe
“What did you notice?”
Compare

“What would you like to know about it?”
Predict
“What do you think would happen if we changed something?”
There is no need to turn the activity into a test. The goal is to help children practice noticing, describing, wondering, and thinking.
From Observation to Independent Thinking
Critical thinking doesn't suddenly appear at a particular age. It develops gradually through experiences, conversations, questions, and opportunities to think.
Observation can be one of the first links in that chain:
When a child carefully examines a leaf, notices a difference between two objects, or asks why something happened, it may look like simple curiosity.
But those moments create opportunities to develop an important lifelong habit:
Ask questions.
Think about the evidence.
Then decide what you believe.
That is the beginning of independent thinking.
A Final Thought for Parents
We don't need to turn every moment into a lesson. Children need time to explore, notice, wonder, and discover things for themselves.
Sometimes the most useful response to a child's question isn't a long explanation.
“That's interesting. What did you notice?”
That small question can move a child from receiving an answer toward building an idea of their own.
And that is one of the most valuable steps on the road to becoming an independent thinker.
